i hold a fond affection for stickers. from my oldest sticker book, to mia’s guerilla gardens local sticker campaign; i am certain of this equation:

adhesive + illustration = wonder!

often, i make my own pasted cards to travel through the post and meet loved ones far away. i believe my choice of adhered visuals are most successful and cost effective in conveying my own frame of mind or particular occupations to a friend.

speaking of mail, there is  the formative film “tommy tricker and the stamp traveller,” which successfully captures the transformative powers of one notable variety of sticker. (the postage stamp)

when i go for walks around my heavily parked neighborhood, or else drive the highways of our country, i am dismayed by the lack of inspirational bumper-wear.

the same old texts are tiresome by now, even at my tender age of 24.

i did find a beautiful, if not new age, wolf face on one isuzu in culver city. i wouldn’t mind sporting that. better yet, the teal chevrolet 76 pickup down the block boldly demands: “Honk if you Honkytonk.” This i can respect as well.

still, amidst all the discussion of bake sales, patriotic flag demonstration, and bush jeering- which of course i can appreciate- i am left wanting more timeless mottos.

all for one and one for all

you don’t know what you don’t know

carpe diem

one day we will live in a world where on demand sticker manufacturing is accessible to the masses much as petco offers engraved plates for a pet friend. if i live to see this day, you will see me and francis, proudly declaring together:

Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken!

    Cecily,

I will be thinking of you often and with love in these next days and into the future.

I’m so lucky to know you and be inspired by your courage and wildness of spirit. I have absolute faith in that. I hope to draw closer in friendship when we have time.

    You won’t be alone!

    Love,
    Paula

I love bumper stickers. You’d think the back end of my vehicle would be covered, but I love them too much to attach them permanently to steel that i may not always own. i sometimes will tape them in the windows so that i might take them with me when the day comes.

    Some of my favorites include:
“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance”
(particularly appropo given Jake’s nearing date with his college life)

Another: (and with great affection for Marg. Mead’s quote. this one turns it sideways)…

“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.” which I got after Bush “won” his second term.

“Subvert the dominant paradigm” is an all time favorite of mine too.

I like the “Coexist” one that has all the different religious symbols. I don’t have that one, but would like it.

What are some that you like?

There’s one around here dear to my heart:

    Start Seeing Bicycles.

My interpretation of that is for drivers to start seeing me, that I cease being invisible.

My wife’s take was for all of us to start seeing more bicycles, that we get people weaned off their cars.

But my 16 year-old great nephew’s reaction was that people should start dating bicycle riders, to start “seeing” bicycles.

I want to make one that says

Drive like a cyclist, ride like a driver.
